Porta Tiburtina
Tiburtina Gate is the gateway in the Aurelian Walls through which the homonymous Via leaves the city. Its story begins well before the Aurelian Walls were built: in 5 BC, when Augustus built an arch at the point where they met the three main aqueducts. Between 270 and 275 the arch was incorporated into the Walls. It was the Emperor Honorius to build a secure second structure, located externally to the first, on top of which were opened five small windows, giving the holder a double architectural aspect: the Roman Republican, inward, and the Late Antiquity, with battlements and the towers, on the outside, demonstrating that the main purpose was to the defense. The dating of Entrance doors is certified by an almost intact inscription.
