Porta Portese

Where Via Portuense, 112, Roma

It was built in conjunction with the Gianicolensi Walls wanted by Pope Urban VIII Barberini. The general appearance is that of an unfinished Gate, with a style rather far from traditional norms: empty niches on either side of the arch, a majestic columns supporting the balcony instead of a walkway embattled, devoid of classic side towers. From the Gate begins the Via Portuense, that leads to Porto, the town at the mouth of the Tiber near Ostia. By Portese Gate was allocated the principal fluvialele port of Rome, said "Ripa Grande". After a period of neglect in the area, was born in the 60's the flea market, today the most famous and popular Roman non-food market, whose visit on Sunday is still one popular leisure loved by tourists and Romans, as evidenced by the same name song of the seventies by the singer Claudio Baglioni.
