Porta Romana

Where Piazza Medaglie D'Oro, Milano

Porta Romana is one of the six main gates of Milan within the ramparts and, like the others, in the past identified the eponymous old district (Porta Romana District). It was the southeast access of the city, along the road to Lodi. The current Gate is on the same road axis (today Corso di Porta Romana) on which stood the previous Roman and Medieval gates. The present monument, an ashlar Doric arch, inspired by imperial Roman arches, was erected in 1596 on the orders of Philip III of Spain as a wedding gift to the bride, Margaret of Austria-Stiria. To the ancient district were made the famous ballad "Porta Romana Bella", played by Nanni Svampa, Giorgio Gaber and other artists, and the film 1980, "Crime at Porta Romana", directed by Bruno Corbucci.
