Chiesa del Carmine

Where Via Martino Antonino, Messina

The church recalls the eighteenth-century style typical of Messina before the destruction of the earthquake. Made by architect Cesare Bazzani (1873 - 1939), it was consecrated on July 15, 1931 and dedicated to Madonna del Carmine. The church and the convent have been rich in valuable works of art over the centuries, including the paintings by Polidoro, Antonello Riccio, Francesco and Stefano Cardillo, Simone Comandé and "Virgin with the Child" by Antonello da Messina. Very venerated in this church is the image of Madonna del Carmine, which tradition indicates brought by those early religious from Palestine or, in the times of Norman kings, painted in Messina. Octagonal church has a single central compartment and is covered by a dome frescoed by Adolfo Romano with a subject representing Carmelite litanies. On the main altar is the eighteenth-century statue depicting Virgin of Carmel, with the Child Jesus in her arms, in the act of keeping the holy habit at San Simone Stock. Made by famous firm Tamburini di Crema and tested on January 30, 1954, the organ represents the most practical and perfected it could offer organ art of the time.
