Monumental Cemetery of Messina (also called Great Cemetery), is one of the most important artistic and monumental cemeteries in Italy. Inside is a large part of the statuary and architecture of Neoclassicism in Messina. Nouveau and Neoclassical architecture of the cemetery is enriched by the presence of lush vegetation and manicured gardens was conceived from the beginning as a true urban park, an open air art gallery. Porta Maggiore is greeted by a striking visual effect created by the large square flowery composing the emblem of the city. From here departs the Monumental Gallery: two avenues that are home to the tombs of the famous men of Messina. Cenobio, in neo-Gothic style, is located at the top, on a plateau, and is home to many monuments of artistic value. Memorial Chapel is a kind of mausoleum crossed by an underground tunnel that resembles the catacombs. The facade is characterized by an elegant colonnade. The artists present are sculptors from Messina Giovanni Lio and Gangeri Scarfì.
