Where Via San Raineri, Messina

It is located on the narrow peninsula of St. Raineri, who with his sickle shape characterizes the great natural Messina's harbor. It was built around 1540 by military leader Don Ferrante Gonzaga, Viceroy of Sicily as part of the realization of a powerful defense system extended to the whole city, ordered by the Emperor Charles V. The project is attributed to Antonio Ferramolino. Its name comes from the fact that it was built on the site where there was the ancient seat of the Holy Saviour Complex. In 1934 it was inaugurated the memorial stone dedicated to Our Lady of the Letter: 35 meters high, built of reinforced concrete and covered with stone of Trapani, topped by a seven-meter bronze statue depicting a blessing Madonna, symbol of the city. The structure has a low and elongated shape culminating in semi-cylindrical bastion said "Campana" on which stands the stele of the Madonna.
