Casa Mazzini

Where VIA LOMELLINI, 11, Genova

The palace, built in the '400 by Adorno in "Road Lomellina", underwent major transformations in the late eighteenth century: the building, sober and rigorous, passed in those years to the Di Negro. In 1794 the Marquis Gian Carlo, scholar and patron, rented, until 1808, a three-bedroom apartment with services, between the first floor and mezzanine, to his doctor Giacomo Mazzini, father of Joseph, and his wife Maria Drago. On the death of Mazzini the workers's associations promoted a subscription to buy the house and make inside a first nucleus of the future Mazzinian Institute; structure, donated to the city, was overwhelmed by the progressive degradation of the area, which effectively limited its use. The building was declared "National Monument" only in 1925 and a subsequent ruling ordered that the expropriation and its purchase, while, for the internal restructuring, we had to wait until 1933. The new cultural center, which united in itself the Museum of the Risorgimento Palazzo Bianco, the historical archive and library, was inaugurated the following year, but already during the War, was closed and transferred for security reasons: the building, in fact, in 1943 was struck by a bombing that damaged the apartment of Mazzini and part of t5he collection. The exhibition industry, has since continuously resized, faced a first major restructuring in the early 80s of last century, and then on the bicentennial of the birth of Mazzini (2005), when it was set up the multimedia part.
