Castello Svevo

Where Via del Castello, Cosenza

The Norman-Swabian Castle of Cosenza is the main monument of the city. It stands on the Pancrazio Hill, and its origins are still uncertain: the building dates back to 937 for defense against Saracen invasions. During the year one thousand was occupied by the Arabs, and became the residence of the caliph Saati Cayti. In 1132 Roger II of Sicily reinforced the foundations and the walls, making it a true Norman stronghold. Severely damaged by the earthquake of 1184, it was renovated in the thirteenth century by Frederick II of Swabia (hence its name). During the Angevin-Aragonese conflict it was used as a brand for the production of coins, and then a princely residence for Louis III of Naples and Margaret of Savoy. Throughout the 1500s, the Castle represented the most important military stronghold of northern Calabria. After a long period of decline during the '600, it was taken by the Bourbons, who used it as a prison and, after the Unification of Italy, came to the City. Following the recent restoration, the Castle preserves the Swabians octagonal tower, the coats of arms of the Angevin engraved on the arches, the shield of Aragon, the secret and the inner courtyard.
