Eremo delle Carceri (Sito UNESCO)
The Hermitage of the Prisons is the place where St. Francis of Assisi and his followers retreated to pray and meditate. Located 4 km from Assisi, on the slopes of Subasio Mount the Hermitage is located near some natural caves, frequented by hermits already in the early Christian. Expanded in 1400 by St. Bernardino of Siena with the construction of the Church of Santa Maria delle Carceri, which incorporated a primitive chapel. The Cloister of the Friars, a triangular terrace overlooking the Fosso of Prisons, leading to the refectory of the monks and to the Church. Upstairs are located in the refectory the monks'cells. Going down a steep staircase, you get to a forest of beech trees and the St. Francis's Cave. In the oak forest, just outside the Sanctuary, it is located the St. Barnabas's Chapel. There are many stories of miracles that are associated with this site.
