This monastery is one of the earliest evidence of Christianity throughout the Western Liguria. Located in the northern foothills of St. Martin's Mount, an area occupied by a series of first Imperial burials (I-II AD), the early Christian structure develops from the fifth century, in connection with what is considered the place of St. Calocero's martyrdom and burial, local Christian martyr. The Church is the only example of Ligurian martyrium, a martyrdom Basilica built on the site of murder of a saint. In Medieval times, it hosted an important Benedictine monastery, dependent on what the Gallinara Island, while in the modern period, a nunnery, finally abandoned in the late sixteenth century.
