Via Po

Where Via Po, 29, Torino

Via Po it is one of the main streets of Turin. Connects the central Castle Sqaure to Vittorio Veneto Square, and is characterized by the presence of typical arcades under which are many shops, libraries and, among thers, the historic Caffè Fiorio, destination of intellectuals and politicians during the nineteenth century. The result of the second urban expansion of Turin, sponsored in 1663 by Duke Carlo Emanuele II of Savoia, the new "Contrada di Po" was designed by Amedeo di Castellamonte and inaugurated in 1674. Its inclined path became the main artery of the district Borgo Nuovo. In 1720, there were the alterations that led to the addition of the arcades that characterize it, and was named Via Po.
