Founded in the first half of the eighteenth century at the behest of King Vittorio Amedeo II, from 1730 belongs to the University. The oldest part (about 500 sqm) is occupied by flower beds, large rectangles divided into geometric flower beds arranged in a fan around the central tanks. The flower beds are bounded by bargioline and contain collections of herbaceous perennials native flora of the Piedmont. At the beginning of the nineteenth century were built the building with the orangery, the hothouse and the museum with herbarium. At that time we also start from the cultivation of woody plants. In 1825, they include the land donated by Vittorio Amedeo III in 1831 and is blazing new flower beds with a third bath. In the mid-nineteenth century, the Garden has its maximum development with more than 12,000 species in culture. In 1840 the grove, nearly two acres, is integrated with many species of trees and shrubs. The alpineto, artificial hill which houses a rock garden with alpine species, was built in 1962. Since 1969 the orangery has been replaced by a greenhouse for tropical crops. In 1986 was built a greenhouse for succulents. Currently, the flower beds are home to collections of mainly aromatic and medicinal species. Of interest is the collection of valuable herbaria.
