Cathedral of Pienza stands on the site of the ancient parish church of Santa Maria but, oriented in a different way, was designed to be placed scenically in the main square of the town, Piazza Pio II, and was built by Pope Pius II Piccolomini between the 1459 and 1462 by Bernardo Rossellino during the renovation of the city. The tripartite facade is in travertine; the bell tower, very slender, was damaged by the earthquake of 1545 and restored in 1570 with 4 bells. The interior is structurally linked to Gothic style, divided into three naves, and enriched by paintings commissioned by Pius II by the most famous artists of the time.
