Neighborhood's name comes from Arabic al-khalisa, meaning "pure" or "elect." The district was established in Arab period and is the first outside the district than the more ancient walls that were in west area, fortified in short time to create another defensive center of the city in southeast of the port. Inside there was the emir's citadel.
