Porta Felice

Where Foro Italico Umberto I, Palermo

Porta Felice is the entrance to the Cassaro (Corso Vittorio Emanuele) from the sea, one of the main axes of the city of Palermo. It is named by Donna Felice Orsini, wife of the Spanish Viceroy Marcantonio Colonna, who ordered its construction in 1582. The Gate, consisting of two massive pylons, was designed by Mariano Smiriglio: the first order (the one that looks into the sea) is in gray marble, with characters typical of the Renaissance; while the latter features more tending to Baroque.
