Monumento a Don Giovanni d'Austria

Where Via Cesare Battisti, 6, Messina

Work by Andrea Calamech, sculptor and architect from Carrara (1573), commissioned by the Senate of Messina in 1572, on the occasion of the victory in the Battle of Lepanto. Bronze Statue presents the finest decorations and plays Don Juan of Austria in the face of the teenager with Spanish complete armor and baton three bands, tramples the severed head of Ali Bassà, opponent commander. In the marble base that supports the Statue are placed an inscription that recalls the setting up of the league against the Turks and available fleet.
