Forte Gonzaga

Standing at top of Colle del Tirone and was built around 1540 by Ferrante Gonzaga, Viceroy of Sicily, within the realization of a powerful defense system extended to the whole city, ordered by Emperor Charles V. The design is attributed to architect Antonio Ferramolino. Forte has a low profile with a strong slope and a star-shaped with six large corner bastions of limestone blocks. The perimeter is surrounded by moats.
