Forte Malatesta is a fortified urban defense. Built near the Castellano river and Cecco bridge, necessary step for those who accessed the city of Ascoli from the east, was rebuilt on the ruins of a Roman thermal plant. The Fort benefited from a reconstruction after the destruction by the Lombards, but was again destroyed in 1242. Rebuilt by Galeotto I Malatesta in 1349, the current Castle is the final arrangement operated by Sangallo the Younger, who designed it in 1540 on assignment by Pope Paul III Farnese. Today, the Fort houses a multipurpose museum, made up of the Museum of the Middle Ages and temporary exhibition rooms.
