Parco Archeologico e Museo dell'Area Megalitica di Saint-Martin-de-Corléans

Where Corso Saint - Martin - de - Corleans, 258-294, Aosta

Prehistoric Archaeological Site, came to light in 1969, it is sacred area destined from the start to be the site of recurrent events related to the worship and burial. Five main structural phases have been identified that, from the late Neolithic period, follow one another during the third millennium BC, throughout Copper Age. Configured first as an open-air sanctuary for the worship of the living, the area only takes in the last centuries of the millennium funerary functions, becoming a privileged necropolis with monumental tombs of various megalithic types. At the dawn of Bronze Age, around 2000 BC, and for reasons yet to be specified, the site is being phased out and take their place for over a millennium, cereal cultivation. It must be emphasized that the only sacred feature of megalithic assumed the presence, in immediate vicinity of a major stable settlement, which must be located to the northwest of the area itself, but has not yet been possible to identify. The exhibition of megalithic route of Saint-Martin-de-Corléans begins with a descent time from today to Prehistoric times: along a route dotted with images related to human history, the museum entrance walkways lead visitors to the level of real archaeological site (at about - 6 meters above street level). This opens the eyes a grand setting: the effect sought is that of an overall visual emotional understanding, grasped as monumental complex, modulated lighting that changes gradually with respect to the different hours of the day. Through the dimension of time, the lights tones color the atmosphere that surrounds the archaeological findings, the dolmen, the demolished stele, platforms, traces of plowing. The visit is a continuous overlooking the site, in a kind of ongoing dialogue "inside-museum/outdoor-site" and you can find explanations, insights and interpretations of educational and multimedia devices. The path is divided into six sections, which follow and reconstruct the periodization of the site: the welcoming of history ends curve indicating the passage to the plowing, then the wells, then crossing the long environment dedicated to the poles alignments, to reach anthropomorphic stele and the final phase of the tombs.
