Erected by Roman Senate between 100-116 A.C. probably by Syrian architect Apollodorus of Damascus, Arch is Proconnesian marble and pays tribute to the emperor who had it enlarged at its own expense the city's port, as indicated by the inscription. According to tradition, at the attic was placed equestrian statue of Trajan, in gilded bronze, with the right his wife Plotina and left Ulpia Marciana, his sister, then stolen by Saracens. In 1859 it was built the access stairway.
