"Queen of Dolomites", it is the largest and most famous of the 18 Municipalities that make up Ladinia region, as well as a renowned winter and summer tourist resort, which hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and is the scene of numerous international events related to the mountain and winter sports. Several churches and chapels dotting the territory, the most  importanto of which is Basilica of Saints Philip and James. "Comun Vècio" (Old Town Hall), located in Piazza Roma, was the administrative center during Habsburg domination and today is the seat of Civic Library and city band. Among the remains of ancient Austro-Hungarian fortresses, Tre Sassi Fort (1897), where today stands Museum of the Great War of Dolomites. To visit, Military Shrine of Pocol. Among cultural characteristics of Cortina, Ampezzo language, local variant of Ladino; sensitivity for musical activities and typical dishes, which still retain the names in German. The surroundings are divided into small villages with unaltered charm, to explore with pleasant trekking routes.
