From the twelfth century it was determined in Calabria considerable immigration of ethnic monks groups from the East. The region, therefore, is dotted with caves, evidence of a pattern of life that had as its protagonists the Basilian monks. These testimonials are the highest expression in the Rock Zungri Village, dated between twelfth and fourteenth century, and onsists of about a hundred cave-dwellings carved into the rock with environments and single-celled celled, some even several floors, covering an area of about 3000 sqm. The settlement is divided with pathways-steps leading to living cells underground. Their shape is varied: some have a cover with a domed ceiling, others have windows of various shapes. Set within, there are numerous niches and business used for different purposes.
