Abbazia di Fonte Laurato

Where Badia, Fiumefreddo Bruzio (Cosenza)

In Cent'Acque Valley, beautiful green setting, stands Abbey of Santa Maria di Fonte Laurato, built in 1201 by Norman governor Simone de Mamistra as gift to Gioacchino da Fiore. Church, one large nave with wooden trusses, is closed by an apse with a basin. Besides the nave, pointed arch and two windows delimit the space of Choir. The main apse, in tufa, is flanked by two secondary apses. On the facade there is a notched rose window, carved in stone, and an entrance porch with four round arches, within which you can see traces of paint. The building is dominated by a bell tower with two rows of arches ending in a gable. Monastic complex is completed by wing with ancient monks' cells, a cloister and a refectory.
