Borgo San Frediano

Where Borgo San Frediano, 109-111, Firenze

Located in the district of shops of artisans in Oltrarno, where the Florentine vernacular was more spread, it is the neighborhood to which the Florentine writer Vasco Pratolini dedicated his novel, "The Girls of St. Frediano". In this Way and in Carmine Square there were the church and convent dedicated to St. Frediano, built before the tenth century. In 1783 the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo aggregated them both to the St. Frediano's Church in Cestello. From 1534 to 1749 the convent was inhabited by the nuns of the Archangel Raphael (Romite Bridge). In 1845, the monastery was suppressed and its local passed the Manufacture of Tobacco, and in 1895 for residential buildings. The Church became the study of sculptor Pasquale Romanelli. On the lintel of the door remained a marble bas-relief, carved by Cennini, representing the Archangel Raphael with Tobias. Today it is used by the descendants of the Romanelli family as sculpture studio.
