Piazza Santissima Annunziata

It is located in the historic center of Florence, dominated by the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata. The name is attested from the second half of the thirteenth century, in close relationship to the original church, which houses a miraculous Annunciation. Destination of pilgrimages and processions, was soon necessary enlarge both, as well as creating a convenient way of connection to the center, Via de' Servi (1255-56). Decisive moment for the qualification of the Square, however, was the intervention of Filippo Brunelleschi, who was responsible for the Lodge of the Foundling Hospital. Adding to the beauty of the space, were in the first half of the seventeenth century some exceptional items of street furniture: in the center, was placed the equestrian monument to Grand Duke Ferdinand I, by Giambologna completed by Pietro Tacca in 1608; at the same notch must also two fountains with marine figures in bronze at the sides (1629). With these actions, the Square assumed current characteristics. On it they overlook Budini-Gattai Palace, the Mary's Servants Lodge and the access to the National Archaeological Museum. The place is still the fulcrum of festivals and markets particularly felt in the city: the Annunciation (March, 25), which coincided with the Florentine New Year, and the "Rificolona", exclusively Florentine, which falls on Sept. 7 and It is probably related to the ancient Marian pilgrimages (in fact, the particular paper lanterns, "rificolone", were used by the pilgrims to light their way).
