Ex Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi
After the final reconquest of Amantea by Byzantines (1031-1032) was installed on the slopes of the rise of Castle a Basilian community of Greek rite who founded St. Basil's Church, perhaps on the site of an ancient mosque remnants of Arab domination. In December 1121 Pope Callistus II, traveling to Reggio Calabria, was hosted by Basilian monks in their monastery of Amantea. We can assume that during the twelfth century Monastery declined, since in 1216 Blessed Piero Catin, companion of St. Francis of Assisi, along with other religious, was installed in old Basilian Monastery founded a Franciscan Monastery and adjacent Church St. Francis of Assisi.
