Piazza dei Miracoli (Piazza Duomo - Sito UNESCO)

Where Piazza del Duomo, Pisa

Piazza del Duomo is the most important artistic and tourist center of Pisa. Listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, you can admire the monuments that form the center of religious life of the city, called "miracles" by Gabriele d'Annunzio, in 1910, for their beauty and originality: Cathedral , Baptistery, Campo Santo and Campanile (Torre Pendente or Tower of Pisa). From this derives popular name of Piazza dei Miracoli, which spread in the post-war period. Piazza del Duomo is closed to the north and west by Medieval walls with Tower of Santa Maria, Porta del Leone, Tower of Catallo and Porta Nuova, while the south side is occupied by long structure of ancient Hospital of Santo Spirito, which houses among other things Museo delle Sinopie; next to the bell tower is Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. Roman she-wolf was placed in the meadow, between the bell tower and Opera del Duomo Palace, in 1926, on the occasion of Mussolini's visit to Pisa. Monumental fountain at the entrance to the square is the work by Giuseppe Vaccà and Giovanni Antonio Cybei. Near the door of San Ranieri is a column supporting a Roman-style vase, formerly part of a much larger and more precious monument, a symbol of imperial power
