Museo botanico e orto botanico dell'Università di Pisa

Where Luca Ghini, 5, Pisa

The Botanical Garden, founded in 1543-44 by Luca Ghini, naturalist, physician and botanist from Imola, is the first university botanical garden in the world. Built initially on the banks of the Arno River, near the Arsenal of the Medici, was moved twice to its present location in 1591. In 1591 the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando I De' Medici, decided to set up a "Gallery" that would gather the "works of the nature" of the prestigious University of the Grand Duchy, hence the creation of the Botanical Museum. There was also associated with a painting studio, where a professional miniaturist performed by real botanical illustrations for educational use. Heir to the century gallery, after its gradual decline, the Botanical Museum preserves currently in the various sections, various artifacts from the late nineteenth century onwards.
