La Kasbah - Centro Storico di Mazara

Where Piazza San Veneranda, 2, Mazara del Vallo (Trapani)

In Mazara del Vallo has about 3,000 immigrants, mainly from Maghreb, used for over 25 years in fishing and agricultural activities and crafts of the city. They reside primarily in historical city center, typically Arabic influence. Tunisian immigration in Sicily began around the late 70s, slightly less than a millennium after decisive victory over Muslims by Count Roger the Norman in the year 1073, which recaptured the island. Despite the work of transformation accomplished by Normans, the city still has many distinctive features of Arab-Berber culture. The most obvious sign is Islamic imprint of the road layout of ancient Arab city, aptly named Kasbah: alleys and small winding streets that branch from a central axis and lead to numerous patios, where they open the access to housing.
