The Institute was created in 1927 to protect the scientific heritage of Tuscan culture. It has been completely renovated and refurbished in 2010 and took the name of Galileo Museum, formerly the Museum of the History of Science. It is heir to the Museum of Physics and Natural History commissioned by Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine. The space in front of the museum houses since 2007, a modern monumental sundial.
