Chiostro dello Scalzo

Where Via Cavour, 69, Firenze

The lobby of the Society of St. John the Baptist of the Disciplined or the Passion of Christ, said "dello Scalzo" because during the processions  used to go barefoot, it is entirely frescoed with scenes from the life of John the Baptist by Andrea del Sarto. The intervention of Andrea del Sarto exemplifies the process of painting of the artist, covering the span of his short career. Started in 1509-10, was interrupted in 1517 to his departure for France, enabling the participation of Franciabigio in two scenes. He was then taken up and completed by Andrea in 1526 a few years before his death.
