Chiesa di San Frediano

Where Via di Cestello, 3, Firenze

The St. Frediano's Church in Cestello is located in the Oltrarno district in Florence. It has a Neoclassical monumental three naves, with a Latin cross plant. The present building was built on the site of an older church, the Monastery of St. Mary of Angels, built in 1450 by the Sisters of Carmel, where he lived and died St. Mary Maddalena de' Pazzi, as recalled by a plaque on the external wall. With the Cistercian monks, the Church took the name of "New Cestello", as new Cistercian church. In 1680 the project was edited by Giulio Cerruti, who swung the axis of the building, with the entrance to the Arno. In 1689, Antonio Maria Ferri finished the drum, painted inside with scenes of the Glory of Maddalena and Virtue by Antonio Domenico Gabbiani (1702-1718). Inside there are some structures of the original convent, two cloisters: the first with a central statue of St. Mary Maddalena de' Pazzi, by Montauti Antonio (1726) and a St. Bernard of Clairvaux, by Giuseppe Piamontini (1702); the second, made by Gherardo e Pierfrancesco Silvani. In the former refectory you can admire the great fresco of the "Supper of Jesus after fasting in the desert", by Bernardino Poccetti.
