The first mention of the church date back to 1002, when it is referred to as extramural Ecclesia Sancti Benedictine civitatis Florentiae; in fact, at that time the church was outside the city walls Carolingian. It was one of the 36 ancient parishes of Florence, was equipped with economic goods outside of Florence and some of its Rectors are mentioned in various documents since 1127. St. Benedict is the only church in Florence dedicated to the Holy founder of Western monasticism, today also the patron saint of 'Europe: Benedict of Nursia (480-547).
