Chiesa di San Biagio (o Sant'Agata alla Fornace)

Where Via del Colosseo, 24, Catania

Built during eighteenth century, after the terrible earthquake of 1693, the Church stands on the site where according to tradition was located the furnace where St. Agatha was martyred. The facade is by architect Antonino Battaglia, in Neoclassical style with twin columns supporting a triangular pediment. Linear and sober interior has a nave. The altar is decorated by scrolls, columns and statues of St. John the Evangelist and St. Mary Magdalene. The chapel on the right of the transept is dedicated to St. Agatha: the altar, decorated by precious polychrome marble, retains the remains of the furnace. The scene of martyrdom is reproduced in a fresco by Giuseppe Barone (1938). One of the side altars is dedicated to St. Biagio, reproduced in a painting by an artist from Catania. Contemporary paintings of Sicilian painters enrich the remaining altars.
