Piazza I Viceré

Where Piazza I Viceré, Catania

Made between 1995 and 1998, the Square is located next to the Castle Streetof Via Leucatia, at the site that Federico De Roberto called "Belvede" in the novel from which the Square takes its name. By its design, the architect Ivan Castrogiovanni was inspired by the seventeenth-century Benedictine aqueduct, now lost. Square and Park together occupy an area of over ten thousand square meters. The materials used are different colored lava stone and milky travertine from Trani. The Square is constituted by a bare space with pavement slightly concave; the Garden is divided by walkways. Along the perimeter of the complex there are three portals in lava stone, carved with leaf motifs and spirals that recall the architecture of Catania eighteenth century.
