Jewish neighborhood was built next to the west and south walls of the city. The presence of Giudecca in Catania dates back to the third and fourth centuries, when they appear the first plaques relating to Jews deceased. Giudecca was equipped with two synagogues, a hospital, a slaughterhouse and a cemetery just outside the walls, certainly accessible by a Judeca Gate, perhaps located at Cipriana. The Jewish community of Catania was mainly in business with the fish market, as well as linked to the workers who worked on the construction of the Ursino Castle. Giudecca was depopulated as of June 18, 1492.
