Fontana di Cerere

Where Piazza Cavour, 21, Catania

Designed initially for University Palace and designed by Giuseppe Orlando in 1757, the Fountain was always object of popular disastrous legends fueled, in 1882, by the death of his restorer, sculptor Francesco Licata, right inside the main basin. Today monumental Fontana is located in the central Cavour Square, on top of a pedestal in Baroque style, in Carrara marble, decorated on each side by a mask from whose mouth comes out of the water. From the first suspended basin, in form of four thick shells, the water overflows directly into the main pool, constituted by four angular dolphins and sculpted pebbles.
