Where Piazza Carlo Alberto, 29, Catania

Built on the ruins of an ancient temple was founded in 262 AC. The first Church, according to tradition, was built in a lava cave already used as a cistern. In the eighth century, during Muslim conquest of Sicily, the upper Church was abandoned. With the advent of the Normans, the Church was restored and, perhaps, in this period are the large columns of the presbytery, while resizes access to the underground Church, which becomes the current Crypt. Completely destroyedin 1693 by the earthquake, it was rebuilt and only completed in 1801. The uniqueness of the Cave making it the seat of suggestive liturgy in Greek. Abuot the origin of the upper temple we have a few news: it presents a longitudinal plant with slightly raised chancel and flat apse. The facade is very sober, presenting two orders divided by a frame supported by four smooth pilasters of composite order. Inside is a single nave marked by alternation of niches of different heights.
