Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi all'Immacolata

Where Via Crociferi, 2, Catania

The facade of the Church, in the late Baroque Catania style, was completed at the first half of the nineteenth century in limestone from the quarries of Melilli. It is accessed by a staircase. The main facade has two orders with two lateral twins bell towers with a domed roof. The churchyard is surrounded by a marble balustrade with statues of Saints. The interior has three naves: in the right aisle, a remarkable wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception (eighteenth century); other altars display paintings by Giuseppe Zacco and Giuseppe Rapisarda. The dome of the apse in the central nave is decorated by Olivio Sozzi and Francesco Sozzi with allegories of the Virtues. Polychrome marble altar has a tabernacle in lapis lazuli mosaic on a chiseled gold base by Paolo Guarna (1574). In the left aisle the most important work is the painting entitled "Road to Calvary", by Jacopo Vignerio (1541).
