Terme della Rotonda

Where Via Rotonda, 28, Catania

Roman Thermae dated to the third century AC, on which was built a Church, probably of Byzantine period, with a large dome supported by buttresses that earned the entire complex the name "Rotonda". Thermae are a large complex of quadrangular buildings connected together, among which there is a large hall with an apse oriented north-south (frigidarium), dating from the first phase, which leans on the east side of a large room full of numerous suspensurae (calidarium) which were to carry a mosaic floor. South open several other rooms belonging to phase II-III century, used as saunas and perhaps a tepidarium. The structure is most striking, however, that of the former Church of Santa Maria della Rotonda, a square-shaped room with two openings and a portal in limestone of the sixteenth century. Inside the square room it is made into a circular shape, closed by dome. From original painted decoration few traces remain, the oldest are the Saints Leone and Nicola and a Madonna Enthroned with Child, dating from the twelfth and fourteenth century. Date back to the eighteenth century, however the other frescoes in the presbytery and the vault.
