By order of Charles V of Spain, along the walls ge was commissioned architect Sferrandino da Bergamo to build seven Gates and eleven Bastions in lava stone. Entire defensive system was almost completely destroyed by the ravages of the late seventeenth (lava flow in 1669 and the earthquake in 1693). Currently, there are visible lower ramparts of the walls, recognizable for typical structure steep and along the Via Plebiscito the boundary between the Bastion of the Infected and the Tindaro Bastion. There are other buildings outside of the sixteenth-century walls, which had the function of fortification and surveillance.
