Castle was built since 1540 by Genoese after the destruction by pirate Dragut existing settlement, based on a Pisan fortress of the twelfth century. Until almost 1700 Fort housed entire population of the island and the main church. With the construction of Fort was abandoned settlement to the island's center and enhanced the port. In the nineteenth century a large landslide, still visible from the sea, involving the east side of Fort, causing numerous deaths among its inhabitants and destroying "Women's Quarter", which included a monastery of nuns.
