Casaletto Spartano

Where Casaletto Spartano (Salerno)

According to local legend of Medieval origin, town developed around ancient district "Spartoso", from which the name Spartano could derive. The abandonment of old nucleus, again according to this legend, was caused by an invasion of ants. Much more likely, the first nucleus of the town was built at the foot of Mount Difesa because the place was rich in water, being present in the area numerous springs and a small river. The most representative place of Casaletto is undoubtedly "Il Capello". This locality is part of a complex that is characterized by a high environmental value. The town takes its name from the waterfall "Hair of Venus" whose name derives from the lush growth of Capelvenere plant. Near the watercourse there is also a well-preserved mill and an old ruin called "Sorgitore", which allows the diversion of the waters coming from the spring that originates near Melette, so that a part of the waters feed the mill and the remaining part end up in the river. Il Capello also presents a whole series of internal routes that allow visitors to visit various scenic places that the watercourse creates along its route.
