Bisceglie

Where Bisceglie (Barletta-Andria-Trani)

Bisceglie extends mainly on the coast, the territory was inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the dolmen of Chianca, Albarosa and dolmen of the farm Frisari, as a natural outlet on the sea for the farmers who, slowly, gave life to the small maritime village of Vescègghie. Current Bisceglie is barricaded on the sea, around ancient port, still active. The intra-moenia city seems to have been built in a single excavated block; the extra-moenia city is full of churches, convents, palaces, villas and farmhouses. Concathedral of St. Peter the Apostle, built between 1073 and 1295, is a fine example of Romanico Pugliese, in whose crypt are the relics of the three patron saints: Mauro, Sergio and Pantaleone. Church of Sant'Adoeno, built in 1074 within the walls, is the oldest church after Cathedral. Among the most important buildings from historical-architectural point of view: Municipal Theater, Palazzo San Domenico, Town Hall, Palazzo Tupputi. "Palazzuolo" is the largest square in Bisceglie, indicated in toponymy as Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The dimensions, architectural and environmental quality of the spaces make it one of the most interesting squares in Puglia. Much of ancient fortification structures are currently accessible and visible, especially on the side of the port. In Agro Biscegliese there are still several historical farmhouses and caves.
