Caltagirone

Caltagirone, in the center of Calatino area, is famous for the production of ceramics, an activity developed over the centuries from ancient Greeks. After a glorious past that saw it for over two millennia privileged stronghold for Byzantines, Arabs, Genoese and Normans, today Caltagirone, thanks to its historic center full of churches, fine buildings and villas has been included among UNESCO World Heritage Sites, together with Val di Noto. Among the most conspicuous resources should be mentioned: Regional Museum of Ceramics, Sicilian Puppet Show, Civic Gallery of Contemporary Art, its more than 50 churches, the mansions as Villa Patti and Villa Milazzo. PIO XI Library, in ancient Convent of Friars Minor, dates back to the end of the fourteenth century and with about 28,000 volumes, has a cultural and historical prominence, next to Municipal Library and Historical Archive.
