Scuola Grande di San Marco

Where Fondamenta Mendicanti, Venezia

The Grand St. Mark's School is a Renaissance building situated in the Castle district. Founded by homonymous School, it is the current main entrance of the Civil SS. Jhon and Paul's Hospital. The School was the headquarters of a Battuti monks, established in 1260. In 1807, under Napoleonic rule, the Brotherhood was suppressed: the building was the seat of a military hospital before the Austrian govern, and later was transformed into Civil Hospital. The facade, delicate composition of newsstands, with Corinthian pilasters and statues in white marble and polychrome, is a Renaissance gem: divided into two parts, corresponding to the Room, to the left, and the Hotel, right. The marble decorations and high reliefs of the bottom, with two Marcians Lions and St. Marck' Stories, are attributed to the workshop by Lombardo. The main entrance has a porch with columns resting on plinths finely carved. The archway has a bezel in high relief depicting the Saint venerated by the brothers, generally attributed to Bartolomeo Bon, as well as the above statue of Charity. Codussi built the facade of the Hotel and the culmination of more than lunettes with statues. The staircase on the ground floor is a reconstruction of one of the twentieth century Codussi, then demolished. Upstairs are beautiful coffered ceilings and gold trim, which had a rich pictorial decoration. Some canvases with St. Marck' Stories by Jacopo Palma the Older, Jacopo Palma the Younger, Domenico Tintoretto, Bellini and Vittore Padovanino have been returned to their original location; others are on display at the Academy Gallery and the Brera Gallery.
