Chiesa di San Zaccaria

Ancient Church dating back to the ninth century (origin of the city), very close to the ancient history of Venice. The first building was built to house the remains of the John the Baptist's father, donated by the Byzantine Emperor Leo V "the Armenian" to the city of Venice. The doges Angelo and Justinian Partecipazio did add a Benedictine monastery, which in 1105 was destroyed by a terrible fire, together with the Church. The present building is fifteenth work by Mario Codussi: three naves with vaulted ceilings; a tripartite facade by twin columns and open as many windows topped by large arched gable with a statue of St. Zaccaria. The works are stone decorations by Antonio and Luca Gambello Taiamonte. Inside there are the tombs of many doges and works of great value, including carved altars carved by Ludovico da Forli (XV century) and an altarpiece of 1505, the work by Bellini, "Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints". On the inner wall of the facade there are four works by Antonio Vassilacchi said Aliense. In the lunettes on the walls, a series dating back to the 80's of the seventeenth century, consists of eight works by various artists that illustrate the historical and mythical monastery and the Church.
