Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso

Where Cogne (Aosta)

The history of Gran Paradiso National Park is linked to the preservation of its symbolic animal: the ibex. Gran Paradiso is the only mountain massif culminating at over 4000 meters entirely in Italian territory. The Park is affected by five main valleys: Val di Rhêmes, Val di Cogne, Valsavarenche, Valle dell'Orco and Val Soana. The privileged vantage point is Rifugio Pontese, at Pian delle Muande di Teleccio. The largest and most suggestive lakes in the park are located in the area surrounding Colle del Nivolet. Of particular interest are the priority habitats: limestone pavements, Pinus Uncinata forests, limestone low marshes with alpine pioneer formations of Caricion bicoloris-atrofuscae, dry grass formations on calcareous substrates, high peat bogs and wooded peat bogs. To visit, Sanctuary of Prascondù, which also houses Museum of Popular Religiosity, created by Park Authority. The typical food products to taste are boudin (blood sausage), potatoes and moccetta, chamois salami. Survives the craftsmanship of leather, copper, wrought iron and mountain farming tools.
