The sixteenth-century church of Santa Maria Maggiore was used for several different uses until, at the end of the nineteenth century, now abandoned, was ceded to the Administration of State Monopolies that used it as a tobacco warehouse. On that occasion they prepared the modifications to the interior of the building. These superstructures nineteenth century were then removed during a restoration carried out in the late sixties by the Superintendent. The nave was decorated with a cycle of fresco depicting 'The Exaltation of the Cross', 'The Souls of Purgatory', 'The Madonna in Glory with St. Francis'. The fresco, dated 1700, was torn during the procedure mentioned to allow the rehabilitation of degraded support.
