Palazzetto Stern

Where Calle Traghetto Vecchio, 2779, Venezia

The building today called Stern Palace is of ancient origin. The original Venetian-Byzantine structure was built in the fifteenth century, commissioned by the Malpaga family. In the twentieth century, it was purchased by the Stern family, who decided to recover and rebuild the structure using the architect Giuseppe Berti and decorator Raffaele Mainella. Today the building, from home, has been converted into a luxury hotel after a careful restoration. Stern building is a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture mediated by the avant-garde of the early twentieth century. It shows all the decorated facades, although the most important is the facade of the Grand Canal, asymmetric: the ground floor opens onto a terrace overlooking the Canal and the neo-Gothic balustrade, which is reached through a portico supported by Ionic columns resting on a wooden lintel which follows the reasons pointed; the porch of the single-light pointed arch and moved to the left, portal, dominated by a large marble bas-relief. The two main floors follow a common approach, with a mullioned window on the left and right of a mullioned window; the change is at the center, where the first floor there is a lancet, while the second one mullioned window with balcony balustrade. In some parts of the facade panels are inserted and bas-reliefs, one of which is St. George and the Dragon. The right side is characterized by an original window on the second floor, large dormer and highlight the pointed arch. Internally, decorative stone, ancient sculptures and columns, as well as fresh and twentieth-century mosaics by Mainella.
